2020-Experts` View on Construction of Nijgadh International Airport. Green
Club of Thoughts (GCT) organized an online panel discussion on the construction
of Nijgadh International Airport on Wednesday, October 14th. Prof. Dr. Bivek Baral, Professor at the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kathmandu University shared his remarks
regarding need of Nijgadh International Airport considering international trend
on air travel, whereas Mr. Nara Bdr. Thapa, a former Executive Director of
Nepal Rastra Bank and a renowned researcher in the field of economics expressed
his works on the importance of the airport through economic aspects. On the
other hand, Dr. Nawaraj Khatiwada presented his research on the alternatives of
TIA: Issues, Challenges and Prospects, sharing equal view on the construction
of the airport and its weakness. At last, Mr. Nawaraj Chapagain, one of the
noted environmentalists of the nation pointed out the fallacies of EIA report
of Nijgadh International Airport.
The estimated
investment in Nijgadh International Airport is about USD 6.7 billion and covers
about 8000 hectares of land. On completion, it will be the largest airport in
South Asia and the fourth-largest in the world in terms of land area. In 2008,
the cabinet of PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal had decided to construct the airport to
relieve expected capacity restraints at TIA. However, several criticisms have
been raised, mainly regarding the environmental issue along with its EIA, Socio-economic
impacts and it`s alternatives and has been a hot topic of debate both at the
National and International level.
