     October, 2020-Experts` View on Construction of Nijgadh International Airport. Green Club of Thoughts (GCT) organized an online panel discussion on the construction of Nijgadh International Airport on Wednesday, October 14th.  Prof. Dr. Bivek Baral, Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kathmandu University shared his remarks regarding need of Nijgadh International Airport considering international trend on air travel, whereas Mr. Nara Bdr. Thapa, a former Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank and a renowned researcher in the field of economics expressed his works on the importance of the airport through economic aspects. On the other hand, Dr. Nawaraj Khatiwada presented his research on the alternatives of TIA: Issues, Challenges and Prospects, sharing equal view on the construction of the airport and its weakness. At last, Mr. Nawaraj Chapagain, one of the noted environmentalists of the nation pointed out the fallacies of EIA report of Nijgadh International Airport.

The estimated investment in Nijgadh International Airport is about USD 6.7 billion and covers about 8000 hectares of land. On completion, it will be the largest airport in South Asia and the fourth-largest in the world in terms of land area. In 2008, the cabinet of PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal had decided to construct the airport to relieve expected capacity restraints at TIA. However, several criticisms have been raised, mainly regarding the environmental issue along with its EIA, Socio-economic impacts and it`s alternatives and has been a hot topic of debate both at the National and International level.
